The Lighting Study and its importance

We have all felt that a given space had too little or too much light, or even that the lighting caused discomfort to the point of becoming unpleasant, and could, at the limit, interfere with our momentary visual acuity and well-being.
These are some of the consequences – the most immediate only – of a bad lighting project, which can be avoided if it is supported and guided with a careful lighting study, prepared by a technician in the area

The lighting studies, also called lighting studies, ensure that the lighting of an outdoor or indoor environment is comfortable, adequate and efficient for carrying out the tasks designed for that space.

The elaboration of lighting studies allows:

  • Determine the appropriate number of luminaires to obtain the amount of light needed for a given space;
    • The choice of the illuminance value (amount of light that reaches a given plane, coming from the luminaires of the space being calculated) must be based on what is proposed as recommended in the EN 12464 standard. Correct lighting values in a space are very important: too much lighting means extra energy expenditure, too little lighting makes it difficult to carry out tasks, both causing discomfort, general discomfort, which can cause vision problems, headaches and general tiredness of the user.
  • Analyze the best distribution of luminaires in the space;
    • According to the configuration of the space, the tasks that are planned for it and the location of the furniture, it is possible, during the luminotechnical study, to distribute the luminaires in order to obtain the desired lighting.
  • Determining whether or not a given lighting solution is uncomfortable from the user’s point of view;
    • When carrying out the lighting study, it is possible to analyze whether a given distribution of luminaires causes the user to experience glare or visual discomfort. If this condition is confirmed, it is easily possible to simulate another solution with another type of luminaire, which allows better results in terms of comfort.
  • Customize environments according to space architecture and customer needs;
    • Each space has a configuration determined by its architecture, in which a certain activity is planned. However, the customer can present specifications and needs that may imply the customization of their lighting, which implies a study dedicated to each case.
  • In the lighting calculation, it is possible to simulate different scenarios for the same space, so that the customer can choose:
    • for the most energy efficient and economical solution;
    • for the solution that pleases you aesthetically, or fits better in your modus vivendi.
