The public transport system in the Porto metropolitan area consists of an electrified railway network running underground in the centre of Porto and above ground in the suburbs. It comprises six metropolitan lines (spanning seven municipalities: Porto, Maia, Matosinhos, Póvoa de Varzim, Vila do Conde, Vila Nova de Gaia and Gondomar) and one funicular line, the Guindais Funicular, with a total of 81 stations covering a distance of 70 km.
